I’ve never been to Fashion Week. Not New York, London, Milan or Paris. I sadly haven’t even made it to Edinburgh Fashion Week as something always comes up – next year it’s happening for sure! Every year fashion week has my heart, I become like a woman obsessed and thanks to social media I can know what happens, when it happens.
New York Fashion Week (My favourite I must admit), is the first of the fashion weeks and pioneered during World War Two as American fashion workers were unable to get to Paris due to Nazi occupation of the city. With the fashion capital of the world out of reach, publicist Eleanor Lambert (press director for the New York Dress Institute) organised a “press week” to show off the very best of American fashion design; celebrating designers who had previously been shunned or ignored by writers blinded by the bright light of Parisian fashion. The event was a huge success and for then onwards Vogue began to feature more and more American designers in the magazine.
Fashion week sets the tone for next season and it helps buyers plan what we are going to buy into the stores for the upcoming season or now in some cases buy in immediately thanks to Burberry and many other designers. Fashion week also allows you to see what big trends are coming up, what major trends are happening now (thank you streetstyle snappers, social media influencers and bloggers) plus see who is the new king and queen of the front row.
I will be glued to my phone over the next fews week following my favourite bloggers on snapchat and instagram stories to see what they are up to, what shows they are heading along to and most importantly what they are wearing.
Will you be tuning in to fashion week?
