Let’s Talk… Role Models

When I asked WAY back in April for what content you would like to see from me, I didn’t expect this to be a topic that came up.

I thought most would be interested in psoriasis or skincare related content and while most of the suggestion was about this, this one caught my attention and made me think.

I could have written about so many role models. I am fortunate to have many incredible role models in my life, most of whom I am close to and are in my family/circle of friends.

Instead, I decided to focus on three role models, in the public eye, who helped me understand and accept my differences. Below, are three incredible women who helped me understand that my differences and illness are only part of who I am, not the full story.

Em Ford, My Pale Skin

Skinfluncer, Redefine Pretty and beauty inspiration.

I first discovered Em on Instagram when I was trying to figure out how to do makeup and cover my psoriasis without it looking cakey. I loved how personable she seemed and how talented she was at applying makeup, plus with a few simple techniques, her skin looked flawless.

I was never able to quite achieve what Em could with her makeup skills, I am just not talented in that way, but she did inspire me to be more confident in the skin I had – makeup-free.

Em’s videos ‘You Look Disgusting’ and ‘Redefine Pretty’ both went viral discussing the impact that cruel comments can have on people and why it’s so important to be kind.

A champion for skin positivity and a kick-ass businesswoman, I would genuinely love to meet her one day and discuss all things skin, beauty, and what more can be done to make a difference.

Carrie Fisher

Star Wars Icon, Mental Health Advocate and all-round general badass.

Outspoken and unshamed Carrie dedicated her platform to mental health awareness & female empowerment. Never without her beloved dog, Gary, she was so secure in who she was. Her acceptance of her mental health made me feel better and more empowered about mine. I know I’m not the only person who feels this way.

“I am mentally ill. I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived that, I’m still surviving it, but bring it on” – Carrie Fisher.

Jameela Jamil

I remember watching Jameela on T4 back in the day. I thought she was super cool back then, and I still do today.

Now, she’s fighting a revolution again shame which led her to start the ‘I Weigh’ movement. This movement is about radical inclusivity so that no-one feels alone.

The fact that she wants to create a world where no one is shamed for being their authentic self if awesome. Jameela comes under a lot of pressure, especially on social media, with others holding here to a super high standard. It’s a shame, and I think it distracts from the good she is doing and calling out what others are too afraid.

There you have it, my top three role models.
